What are Casement Windows?

Casement windows are one of the most common windows found in North American homes. They are hinged on either side of the window pane and open outwards (or less commonly inwards) using a crank. These windows can be small or large and are a popular choice for homeowners who want to enjoy fresh, outdoor air in the comfort of their home.

How Do They Work?

There are several differences between casement windows and other types of windows. However, the main difference is they open and close differently. These windows are hinged along one side and are opened and closed with a crank mechanism. Typically, windows open by sliding back and forth. Because of this, they cannot open further than halfway. With new windows, the crank mechanism allows the window to be fully opened by turning a handle. Because of this great feature, casement windows work best in an area with a lot of space around them so that nothing will interfere with their ability to open.

Why Should You Install New Windows?

There’s a reason why casement windows are so commonly used in homes across Canada and the United States. These windows offer many benefits and features that not all other windows can, including:

  • Better ventilation

Due to how wide the windows open, they are able to increase ventilation in your home, as more air flows in and out. Because the window sash acts like a sail, it can actually catch side breezes and funnel fresh air directly into your living space. This unique design provides significantly more airflow than traditional sliding windows, making it easier to clear out stale indoor air quickly.

  • Lower energy bills

As a result of the increased airflow and the tight seal, the windows work to lower your heating, cooling, and electricity bills. When closed, the window sash presses firmly against the frame. This creates an exceptionally airtight barrier against drafts. When strong winds blow against the exterior, it actually tightens this seal even further, preventing expensive conditioned air from leaking out.

  • Easy to clean

The windows are one of the easiest styles of windows to keep clean and who doesn’t love a low maintenance option? Many modern casement windows feature specialized hinges that allow the sash to open wide enough to easily reach both sides of the glass from inside your home. This completely eliminates the need to climb ladders outside just to wash away seasonal dirt and grime.

  • Long-lasting

The windows are easy to maintain and repair, which means they offer a high return on investment as they can last a lifetime. Built with robust internal hardware and durable framing materials, they resist the warping and sagging that often plague inferior window styles. A simple routine of seasonal cleaning and basic lubrication ensures the crank mechanisms operate effortlessly for decades to come.

  • Versatility

Casement windows have a generic enough design that they can suit any room in your home – including a bedroom, bathroom, or kitchen. They function beautifully as standalone units. However, they can also be easily paired with fixed picture windows to create stunning combinations. Their flexible operational style means they fit effortlessly into tight architectural layouts or expansive accent walls alike.

  • Choice

Just like other windows, there are many different stylistic options to choose from to suit any taste. You can customize your casement windows with a massive variety of exterior frame colours, interior wood grain finishes, and specialized hardware styles. Additionally, you can add custom grille patterns or choose unique glass textures to perfectly complement your home’s architectural personality.

  • Visually appealing

In addition to all the functional benefits these windows have to offer, they are also visually appealing and offer a quaint and elegant style to your home. Their clean, uninterrupted glass panes offer sweeping, unobstructed views of the outdoors, instantly brightening your interior rooms. This timeless design effortlessly boosts your property’s curb appeal, adding a touch of sophisticated charm that never goes out of style.
