What are Casement Windows?

Casement windows are one of the most common windows found in North American homes. They are hinged on either side of the window pane and open outwards (or less commonly inwards) using a crank. How Do They Work?

While there are several differences between casement windows and other types of windows, the main difference is they open and close differently. These windows are hinged along one side and are opened and closed with a crank mechanism. Typically, windows open by sliding back and forth and because of this cannot open further than halfway. With new windows, the crank mechanism allows the window to be fully opened by turning a handle. Because of this great feature, casement windows work best in an area with a lot of space around them so that nothing will interfere with their ability to open.
